Synopsis:East Berlin, November 1984. Five years before its downfall, the former East-German government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the celebrated theatre actress Christa-Maria Sieland. After all, the "operation" is backed by the highest political circles. What he didn't anticipate, however, was that submerging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. The immersion in the lives of others - in love, literature, free thinking and speech - makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life which he has ever more trouble resisting. But the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun...

Heavy going but worth it 35 out of 100
Dealing with how the Stasi dealt with artists in the old east Germany, this is an excellent drama, if a little on the heavy side.

A little slow and maybe a little long this is a true gem. Well deserved Oscar winner. Still thinking about it and enjoying it a few days later.

I knew very little about this film, but I now know why it rates so highly on IMDB and other places. It is an excellent piece of cinema and is highly recommended. You won't be disappointed.

Really enjoyed this movie definitely worth watching even allowing for the subtitles. Excellent story and the setting is very realistic. Gives a good insight into East Germany just before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The lead actor (Stasi agent) in this movie should have gotten every award the year this was releaesed. Brilliant performance as a cog in an all knowing machine that finally sees the truth.Rent this film now!

This is a bleak but excellent film. It shows those of us living in the West just how difficult were the lives of those living in Easter Europe during the Societ regime's domination of that area. So well acted and very moving.

This is seriously one of the best films I've ever watched. Its is so cleverly done, and you can get a real sense of the characters and the tensions of living in East Berlin. Well worth watching!

A must see, EXCELLENT! 50 out of 100
This is a must see film for any discerning film fan. Great acting and excellent portrayal of a torid time in German history. Don't let the fact it has subtitles put you off, it's very easy to follow.

Excellent 45 out of 100
This is an excellent movie - rivetting from beginning to end. It does not pull any punches in telling its story. This is a story set in the obsessive world of the state watching every move of its citizens; one of the things about obsession is that the focus of obsession can shift as it does in this film. In the end the watcher becomes personally obsessed by the person being watched and once you see the person as a person rather than a mission then things change. Powerful acting throughout.

The other side of the wall 40 out of 100
The dvd was sitting on my shelf for a couple of weeks before I got to watch it but I'm really glad I did. Having watched Goodbye Lenin before which I'd really enjoyed, "The Lives of Others" didn't dress up what life was like in the GDR. The depth that state security infiltrated lives is quite frightening. Excellent film

Obsessively good. 45 out of 100
A member of East Germany's Stasi party spies on a suspected rebel, only to find himself becoming obsessed with his life. An excellent film, those of us who still remember the Berlin wall coming down and love John Le Carre books will really dig this. The plotting and acting is superb, by half way through, I forgot it had subtitles and for me, thats a sign of a great film.

this is a movie that requires a bit of concentration (its subtitled for a start) and preferably an interest in history, but its highly rewarding. great story, class acting.

Great film, capturing the oppressive regieme in East Germany where artistic types in particular were under observation by the Stasi. The line between duty to the state and personal empathy towards the characters under survelliance makes for a very engaging film. Definitely worth watching

If you like historical pieces and don't mind subtitles too much then you should rent this movie. Set in East Berlin before the wall came down, it's a facinating insight into the cold war lives of east germans in the 80's.

Watch it immediately if not sooner! 50 out of 100
The best film I've seen in ages. Its a story of life in East Germany in 1984 at a time when everything was monitored and there was no such thing as free speech. It's incredibly moving and beautifully filmed. I can't recommend this film enough. I just wish I hadn't seen it so that I could watch it for the first time all over again.

Definately worth a watch. If you can bear with the slight irritation of having to read subtitles, then watching some often overlooked european cinema, instead of going for the middle of the road hollywood muck, then this is hugely rewarding. A tight, taut and closterphobic atmosphere is brilliantly achieved, the performances spot on, the story cut close to the bone. More scary than alien,predator and freddy kreuger put together!

Outstanding 50 out of 100
One of the greatest films I've seen in the last few years, made even more poignant by the death of the lead actor, Ulrich Muhe, last year, just as he was winning plaudits worldwide for a performance that rivals De Niro's very best. As the film ends on this 'Good Man', its hard to keep the tears away, and its not often you can say that about a political thriller.

A light shines from the darkness 45 out of 100
This is the best german movie I've seen since Bruno Ganz played Hitler. Set in post war east germany, you can feel how the communists gripped a nation with an iron fist. The cinematography is excellent and really sets the tone of the movie. Everyone says its a must watch ... they weren't lying ... rent it now!

East Berlin just before the fall of the Wall & a Stazi officer begins to become over involved in the lives of a dramatist & his girlfriend he is detailed to spy on. Political thriller & a human interest story. Even with subtitles I really found it riveting.

Excellent. Makes you realise how scary the world could be/is. An exploration of human nature and the good and bad in all of us. Depressing and heart lifting at the same time. Rent it.

Grim but good. 40 out of 100
Very well acted story of life behind the Iron Curtain in East Berlin, 1983. It's drab, dreary and grim just like the Stasi like it! Story follows a staunch Stasi officer as he monitors a couple of Thesbians - a famous playwright/poet and an actress. His life and theirs become connected and the tale is very well told and very interesting. Rock solid acting make this a good quality movie.

Excellent film with such a great recreation of the dark GDR. If you get a chance "Google"the actor who plays actor Ulrich Muhe who plays Captain G Wiesler, it's uncanny how his life mirrors the film in parts.

Authentic recreation of a sordid regime. Subtle, uplifting, film showing the triumph of a few people trying to live creatively against massive odds - and converting one of their tormentors to boot!
