Synopsis:Oscar winner Russell Crowe leads an all-star cast in a blistering thriller about a rising congressman and an investigative journalist embroiled in an case of seemingly unrelated, brutal murders. Crowe plays D.C. reporter Cal McCaffrey, whose street smarts lead him to untangle a mystery of murder and collusion among some of the nation's most promising political and corporate figures in State of Play, from acclaimed director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland). Handsome, unflappable U.S. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is the future of his political party: an honorable appointee who serves as the chairman of a committee overseeing defense spending. All eyes are upon the rising star to be his party's contender for the upcoming presidential race. Until his research assistant/mistress is brutally murdered and buried secrets come tumbling out. McCaffrey has the dubious fortune of both an old friendship with Collins and a ruthless editor, Cameron (Oscar winner Helen Mirren), who has assigned him to investigate. As he and partner Della (Rachel McAdams) try to uncover the killer's identity, McCaffrey steps into a cover-up that threatens to shake the nation's power structures. And in a town of spin-doctors and wealthy politicos, he will discover one truth: when billions are at stake, no one's integrity, love or life is ever safe.

Was slightly disappointed with this. Decent storyline with ok acting performances. Just didn't quite get going as much as maybe it should have.

Political Thriller. 35 out of 100
This is something you don't get much of these days, a good political thriller that doesn't lose the plot half way through or lose your interest. Good performances from the stellar cast will keep you watching till the end.

Solid journalistic thriller 40 out of 100
This rattles along at a good pace in the grand tradition of 'All The President's Men'. Good performances all round make this a fine night's entertainment.

I had been highly recommended this film but it wasn't then as good as I expected, I found it slightly dark. Saying that, though, I still did enjoy it. It had a good plot. Unlike another viewer I thought Helen Mirren was excellent in the character she protrayed. Russel Crowe is always brilliant and I'm usually not too mad on Ben Afleck either but he was good in this. Definitely worth seeing if you like something with a few twists

Watchable 15 out of 100
It holds your attention and the pace clips along nicely. Helen Mirren is a duck out of water as the editor. Crowe is crowe and Affleck is his usual piece of wood. The Luminous Robin wright penn is in her second movie that starts with " State of ..... the other being the vastly superior " State of Grace".

Worth watching 40 out of 100
This is a very good film. I'm not a fan of Russel Crow at all but he's quite believable in it. The film keeps your interest throughout & even Ben Affleck is pretty good. Worth a watch.

Political Thriller has twists but falls slightly. 35 out of 100
Unlike other reviewrs i am not aware of its uk predessor so i am only able to judge this movie on its merits. Leaving out crowes poor attempts at being an irish american this has strong perormances from all the cast even affleck turns in a good performance. Crowe is his usual self. Rachel adams steals the show and helen mirren as the no nonsense newspaper editor is brilliant. My problem with the film is that while there is suspense and a good twist at the end the movie fails to bring you along.

Im not a big fan of anything with Ben Affleck in it but it wasnt a bad movie at all albeit with a predictable ending.

This was a rambling, confused mess with lots of people mumbling at each other intently. I was very distracted by Russell Crowe's horrendous hair!

Disappointing 30 out of 100
This is a good attempt but rather disappointing as I have already seen the brilliant UK tv serial first which was an absolute stunner. I might have scored it better if I saw the film first. All the actors are good but I couldn't help comparing back all the time even though the setting has moved from the UK to USA.
