Synopsis:When he was eight, Brian Lackey woke up in the crawlspace beneath his house with his nose bleeding, having no idea how he got there. After that, his life is different - he is afraid of the dark, wets the bed and is plagued by terrible nightmares. Now 18, Brian believes that he was abducted by aliens. Neil McCormick is the ultimate beautiful outsider, the boy everyone loves from afar but is afraid of when they get too close. Also 18, Neil longs for the relationship he had with his baseball coach when he was eight years old. Neil's search for what he thinks is love leads him to New York City. Brian's search for what happened to him leads him to Neil. Together they come to realise that the events that shaped them most were not what they seemed to be. Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Scott Heim, Mysterious Skin puts us inside the hearts and minds of two very different boys living very different lives who maybe aren't as different as they first appear.

This film had potential, but never quite realised it. Couldn't recommend it, but will admit it had *something*.

Disturbing 35 out of 100
This is quite disturbing in parts and reminds me of 'A Home at the End of the World' and 'C.R.AZ.Y.'. So if you liked them, you'll like this I guess. And Gordon Levitt is excellent once more.

Disturbing 30 out of 100
A case study of abuse and its effects on the abused, Mysterious Skin is not for the faint-hearted. The opening third is very difficult viewing but it does ease off for the most part after that. The performances can't be faulted but your view of this will mostly depend on your ability to watch a movie with dark themes and graphic abuse so be warned.

Very Powerful and No happy ending 45 out of 100
This is an emotional rollercoaster dealing with the subject of child abuse and its effects on 2 teens in particular who deal with it in totally different ways. You quickly identify and sympathise with both of the leads even though their chosen (or appointed) life paths are totally different. For once the yanks avoided the temptation for a happy ending instead leaving a ? mark hanging. Be warned, there is a nasty violent scene towards the end and it is quite distressing to some people.
