Synopsis:From the agony of dying, legendary director Ingmar Bergman creates a testament to the strength of the soul, and from a story of unbearable pain, a film of absolute power. Karin and Maria come to the aid of their dying sister, Agnes, but jealousy, manipulation, and selfishness come before empathy. Typical Bergman 30 out of 100
Intruiging and quite watchable, but very arty and overly stylistic in true Bergman Tradition. Only for Bergman fans!

A Thoughtful Film 35 out of 100
Bergman doing what he does best here, really laying on the angst with a trowel; but in doing so he has made a very thoughtful film - full of drama. The acting is first class, it's well scripted, well cast, well staged, and once again Bergman employs the outstanding talents of Sven Nykvist - probably the most consistently brilliant lighting camerman in the history of film making. This is an art house film and will not be to everyone's taste - but then that's what Ingmar Bergman is all about.

I really liked it. It was very slow moving but beautifully shot and really made you think about life. It was a movie about women for women. My boyfriend hated it. He'll never watch another bergman movie every again!

Tough going but worth it. Loneliness, frustration, and the sheer unfairness of life, with a harrowing story and brilliant acting. Great film but pick a good night to watch, not a night when the world is lining up against you!!!!!
