Far Too Long 20 out of 100
Beautiful to look at, great cast and extremely authentic but far too long. At 2.40 this is at least 40 minutes too long. More is the pity as it does have its merits and the story is interesting and worth telling. Unfortunately this is one of those labours of love which seems to have put every single word of the book on screen and then lacked a hard cold eye to edit it properly.

This felt like a film that you know is good and that you should really appreciate, but you still find it difficult to relax into it and enjoy it. Casey Affleck is the star, Brad Pitt is very good, but it just goes so slowly.

Despite having Brad Pitt in it, this film was painfully slow and boring to watch. Very hard to keep track of the story line, I turned it off after half way as I lost interest.

This slow moving account of the assassination of Jesse James seems very worthy-great cinematography, acting, costumes etc but I was left cold. It should have been a great film watching experience on paper but i could not really identify or really care about the characters at all. I did not feel sad when he was shot , I had no sympathy for his wife. On the whole they were all not particularly likeable or well rounded characters. I would only really recommend this as a docu-drama but not as a g

Really compelling tale - wonderful acting (kudos to Casey Affleck in particular, but Pitt and the entire supporting cast were great) and beautiful cinematography. I am no fan of westerns and yet I was completely caught up in this - it is slow-moving, and yet the story carries you along so well you think the running time is much shorter than it actually is. Highly recommended!

Deconstructing a legend, this film charts the last days of James in a warts and all depiction of the Union in the late 1880s. This though the eyes of a wannabe famous outlaw, Robert Ford, the man who would eventually do for Jesse. When the end comes, we totally emphasise with the assassins: such a relief that such a psychopath is finally dead. Another good performance from Casey Affleck: no doubts where the acting talent went in that family. Pitt also shines as this most unheroic of heroes.

This is a slow burning meditation on the nature of bravery, with Affleck's Bob Ford by no means the coward he was remembered as. The initial hero worship by the young Ford of notorious outlaw Jesse turns to outrage and hatred as his idol mocks and abuses all those around him, and lashes out randomly with murderous paranoid violence. Pleasantly Surprised 35 out of 100
Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck both put in a great performance in this film. I was particulary impressed with Affleck-who sublimly conveys Coward's unease and apparent discomfort in general socail interaction. Pitt is also convincing as James, and although the film seemed quite long-it tells an interesting, yet classic tale- it's definitely worth the rental!

Good but not exactly great 25 out of 100
I enjoyed it after realising what it is. Its not so much a 'cowboy film' as a film about a cowboy. It was a bit confusing at times as it wasn't explained why Jesse went off killing these men. As a love story it was very good. I took it that Robert Ford actually loved Jesse. I hope that was the intention od the original writer.

If you got a B in Mid-West American History (1846-1886) and enjoy Westerns, you'll love this. If you're anybody else its slow, hard work. That said it does show a facinating insight into how his gang and assassin disintegrated into murder, alcohol and suicide.

Good film, perhaps a bit long but not boring. There's lots of tension in every scene as you wait to see if Jessie is going to explode about something or if someone will have the courage to stand up to him. There are no completely wasted scenes unless you are of the "instant gratification" type. There's a point to most scenes if you have the wit to see it. Still, it wouldn't have lost much by being slightly shorter. Filming and acting first class.

Totally pointless and utter rubbish its far too long and drawn out I kept on thinking that somethingis going to happen in a minute that will get me hooked. This movie stole 2 and a half hours of my life dont make the same mistake a desperate movie and for once everyone elses comments ring true on the review page,just wish I had read them first.

Look, if yer a Western Fan, get it. But be warned... this is more like a 6 part History recreation shown in one go, like those Discovery Channel things ye watch having dinner waiting to go out like. It looks the dogs ballix, and the authentic accents are ace. But story wise it's very lackluster and does'nt take off at all. I stopped watching it, I caved in sad to say. But the bird watched it during a hoovering break and caught the end, of which there was'nt much left! Pity!

Not a bad story, but a very slow moving movie. You pretty much know whats going to happen before it happens. Could have been put together better. Brad Pitt is convincing though, as are the other actors. I think its the director who lets us down here!

this is one of the most strangest movie experiences i have ever had. its a film of 2 halves. the first half is incredibly mind numingly boring. I may have even dozed off one or twice. However, the second half more then makes up for it when its all about Ford. I would actually watch it again. the acting (except brad) is excellent. the sets excellent, the narration excellent...but watch it all (its tough)... it will be worth it..

While i am not a fan of westerns i really liked this movie, it is beautifully shot and superbly acted, while it is not gripping and wont have you at the edge of your seat, it does grab your attention...it is slow paced throughout but that adds to the mood of the movie...it is 2.5 hours long so set some time aside for it...

Great film, brilliantly acted. I have no love of 'flawed characters' and even less sympathy so i enjoyed the film for its realism but it wasn't exactly an emotional rollercoaster! I didn't find that I cared about any of the characters in the film. Brad Pitt is very, very good in this...

A very deliberately slow film that takes its time and luxuriates in the colours, sounds and images of the times. Affleck & Pitt are both excellent. Lots to enjoy for those folk who like to take their time about a film! But ultimately, is it worth it? Yes and no - I'm not sure I would want to see it again, but I'm glad I saw it!!!

Casey Affleck well deserved his Oscar and Emmy noms for this one. He's mesmerising in it. Beautiful movie, if a bit dull at times. A slow burner, but I enjoyed it, especially as I knew practically nothing about Jesse James beforehand. One to watch on a lazy Sunday.

Ultimately, this film is well worth the rent. Though you may be two hours in before you come to come to reason why. It is long, and it is slow-moving, particularly as you've a reasonable idea of where it's all headed. The first hour and a half are particularly slow, and although the pace never exceeds a light jog after that, I all of a sudden found myself fascinated and hooked.

Connoisseurs only need apply 30 out of 100
As highlighted by previous reviewers, this is one seriously slow movie.You really need to be in the mood to watch a film like this.Would not reccomend a glass or two of the grape whilst watching this as you will visit noddyland all too quickly.Only time my wife has fallen asleep during a Brad movie!! That said the performances were quality from both Affleck and Pitt and if you like strong character based films you will enjoy . One for the Connoisseurs I would suggest.

Memorable but slow moving 35 out of 100
This is a film that should credit the scenery as a character in itself - a best supporting role! Beautifully and memorably shot, tension builds throughout the film, with as much communicated in a glance and a laugh as through the half mumbled dialogue. Similar to a movie like 'The Thin Red Line', you have to be in the mood to sit and watch the story of the tightening bind between an increasingly paranoid Jesse James and the adoring Robert Ford slowly unfold. An action movie it ain't!

Soulful, mournful and beautiful - a real epic 45 out of 100
Winter 1881, and the James gang is falling apart, as is Jesse himself; Ford, attracted by the legend, gradually discovers the truth is both less romantic and more violent than he imagined. Brad Pitt shows he can actually act, and Casey Affleck eclipses anything his brother ever did. Nick Cave's score, and Roger Deakin's shooting of the Missouri landscape add to a film that's sad and haunting

An exercise in tension, this is one example where the viewer knowing what is coming does not dilute the effect. Beautifully shot and with a score that multiplies the tension, this is a standout movie. Pitt plays the famous Jesse James but Afflec is the centre of attention as we are allowed into the mind of this freakish person who is a very unsettling screen persona. He must be one of the most sinister, unsettling characters brought to the screen in some time. Highly recommended.

That dirty little coward 35 out of 100
A long slow moving film (almost 2 1/2 hours) that requires your full attention, but I believe that its worth the time spent. Based on the actual events this is a very interesting film, but its not your typicial western, there's not an awfull lot of gunfighting or action. The director seems to have stuck rigidly to historicial facts and this means there can be long periods where not much seems to happen, the characters are well devolped and overall is a good film.

Amazing movie about the outlaw Jesse James, and Robert (Bob) Ford - the mild-mannered member of his gang - who would ultimately become Jesse's killer. Brad Pitt gives a strong & bold performance as Jesse, but the film belongs to Casey (brother of Ben) Affleck. He plays the likeable and gentle Bob, who idolises Jesse and would do anything for him. He was deservedly Oscar nominated for his role in a film that has high quality acting, a deep, well scripted story & beautiful cinematography. RENT IT!
