Synopsis:Nineteen year–old Malik (Tahar Rahim) is condemned to six years in prison. Arriving in jail friendless and alone with no–one to protect him, he soon finds himself drawn into the brutal violence and gang warfare of daily prison life. Taken under the wing of a powerful boss, Malik is initiated into the criminal ranks. Once on the outside, he is entrusted with more and more important missions. But Malik is brave and a fast learner and secretly has his own plans that don‘t involve taking orders from anyone else. Jacques Audiard, acclaimed director of "The Beat That My Heart Skipped", brings us the winner of this year‘s Grand Prix at Cannes. Having recently won the Best Film award at the London Film Festival and being hailed by critics as a classic in the same vein as "The Godfather", "A Prophet" instantly takes its place as a masterpiece of the crime genre.

My better half is not a great fan of the foreign movie but she loved this and so did I, it is a real warts and all portrayal of what life is like inside the prison system in France grim and hard hitting with a good plot to support the overall movie highly recommend one of the best movies I have seen this year.

Subtitles? I had to interrupt viewing to ensure this option had been selected! Unless you are fluent forget it. They are as scarce as hen's teeth. A most frustrating experience.

Engaging and thought provoking 40 out of 100
I really enjoyed this film. It maintains your attention throughout, with its look in to France's underbelly of crime, prison and race relations. You go from sympathy with the main character at first to marvelling at his survival skills, mixed with sadness at his descent in to serious crime. It is fairly graphic at times in depicting violence and is quite long, but yet it doesn't feel that long. I'd recommend it.

Gritty, clever, if a little long 40 out of 100
Really enjoyed this, but its not for the faint hearted. the main character is intriguing, watching how he evolves, seeing how he moves from slave to master. I found it dragged a little here and there though. Still recommended, if you can stomach the violence which in parts is pretty graphic.

Long, slow-paced and deliberate, A Prophet will reward those who put in the effort. And judging by all the negative reviews it is sad to think so many people out there just cannot abide subtitles...doesn't say much for the intellect of many folks. Cant they see the language listed in the Description is 'French'?! Anyway, for those willing to take it on it is very good. I'll say not fantastic due to the pacing and a thin plot but the lead acts it well.

I had no specific expectations but what a nice surprise. The actors are really good and the story line is really good. Goodfellas with a French touch. Best movie I have seen in 2010.

Stopped caring about 30mins in 20 out of 100
Has the makings of a good film perhaps, but I just didn't care about the main character and I turned off less than an hour in. Watched it tired too, probably didn't help!

Wish Lidl mentioned the whole thing was in french ! very disappointed. Turned it off after 5 mins as i do not have a masters degree in french ! dont bother

Unless you are fluent i French and can watch this film the way it was intended do not bother renting it. The English translation does not work at all. To be honest even watching it in French is not that great

You live in prison and what you live isn't giving 20 out of 100
A Prophtet tells the story of a somewhat naive but intelligent young inmate from Arabic origins who rises through the criminal ranks to become a big boss. Serve with an outstanding cast and an almost exclusively males and non-professional actors, the film of Jacque Audiard manages to prove that you don't need a so called bankable actor/actress in order to make a masterpiece.

Pure rubbish. Just dont bother. No proper storyline, bad acting . Most annoying film I have seen this year. Whoever did the subtitled translations omitted half the dialogue.

The 30 sec trailers looked real good on this. Wish I'd stuck with thirty seconds and wouldn't then have wasted a hundred and some-odd minutes watchin pretentious rubbish!

Good French prison film, also with some outside action when the 'hero' gets day leave for good behaviour (!). I liked this much better than Mesrine; its far more grittier and real, even though its fiction and Mesrine is supposed to be true!
